I always do a board message each day for my students to answer.
Today’s was “Thoughtful Thursday”. Usually, I write, “What is something thoughtful you can do for others today?” However, today I wrote, “What is something thoughtful someone else has done for you this week?” in an effort to focus their attention on what others are doing for them and how important it is to notice that as well.
The students write their message on the board, and then before we leave for Specials, I go around and allow those who want to share aloud to do so. I had lots of students share moments where their peers had helped them up when they fell roller skating in gym, or how one of their friends did something sweet for them.
I had gotten to everyone who had their hand raised. It was 7:59, so we were already late for Specials (per usual), when my student from my “special moment” yesterday raised his hand at the last second.
I called on him.
He said, “Teach me.”
It made me smile.
The little things really do make a difference.
love always, caitlin
Awww. Sweet moment, well told. And I appreciate how much worthy mileage you’re getting from the daily board message.

Thank you. π The daily board message is something I picked up from my cooperating teacher when I was student-teaching and was the thing I was most certain about implementing. It gives such a great space to learn about kids, make them think right away in the morning, and allow them to share about themselves to me and their classmates. Thank you for checking out my blog! π

Little things do make a difference. I’m glad you got to call on him today and made that connection. He walked out knowing that he mattered in your eyes. And in the end, that’s what matters most.
Thanks for sharing with us today! π

Oh! So sweet! That was definitely worth being an extra minute late to specials! I love your writing craft of the parenthetical aside about being late (as always)–that’s me, too, so it made me laugh.
