I think the most beautiful part of my day happened after lunch.
Our students were filtering back to the classroom, getting what they needed, and going to the bathroom.
One of our students – who talks a lot, asks endless questions about everything, helps us make sure we drink enough water in the day, you get the picture, etc. – came back laughing uncontrollably, while trying to tell us a story.
This is the kind of laughter I live for. The giggles that you cannot stop. The ones you cannot talk over. They overflow out of your belly and slip out of your throat the way a cat slips out a screen door.
He is trying to tell us the story for about 5 minutes and only jumbled words and phrases come out. I did not understand it, but somehow my partner teacher did.
I asked, “Did you hear what he actually said?”
She nodded while laughing.
Turns out, this is what happened: At lunch a student was going to wash the tables and he wrung the wash cloth off on the floor instead of in the bucket where he was supposed to.
That’s it.
That was the story.
He probably gained a couple of years on his life for laughing that long.
All because one of our other students didn’t know exactly where to wring the wash cloth.
love always, caitlin
My sixth graders tell stories like this all the time. Today’s was about someone putting their hand in dog stuff on the playground. Somehow I always feel compelled to laugh along, because if I didn’t I would be the only one not laughing!

Caitlin, I can totally see that cracking up little guy falling apart with incontrollable giggles – you described it so well!! And, I can also see you watching him with your own smile spread across your face cheek to cheek giving him the space to safely share the moment. This entry shows the essence of why you love what you do. So much joy in these simple moments of laughter. It’s medicine.

I can picture this happening and I think it might give me those giggles, too! (After I got past my teacher reaction.) thanks for sharing this sweet moment, and for sharing your enthusiasm for letting laughter flow. “Like a cat slipping outa screen door…”- what a fantastic, original phrase!

Such a fun post! I especially love how you describe giggles that “slip out of your throat the way a cat slips out a screen door”. A beautiful part of the day, and a beautiful description.
